News Release: Taxpayers Federation calls on B.C. government to exempt home heating from provincial carbon tax

Author: Carson Binda 2023/10/26

VANCOUVER, B.C.: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on Premier David Eby to suspend the provincial carbon tax on home heating fuels, following the announcement on federal exemptions today.

“British Columbians are being hit with a provincial carbon tax and we need the Eby government to suspend the carbon tax on home heating,” said Carson Binda, B.C. Director for the Canadian Taxpayers Federation. “Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s announcement for some limited carbon tax relief on home heating is a small step in the right direction, but won’t help British Columbians because of our provincial carbon taxes.”

Prime Minister Trudeau has admitted that the carbon tax makes life more expensive for Canadians when they’re heating their homes. To address that pressure, the federal government announced temporary exemptions on the federal carbon tax for home heating oil.

“With Trudeau conceding that the carbon tax makes life more expensive, we need to see Eby providing British Columbians with relief,” said Binda. “Eby’s colleagues in the Manitoba NDP and politicians across the country are all suspending fuel taxes, but British Columbians are getting the short end of the stick from our provincial policy makers.”
