Poll: Majority of BC Opposed to PST Expansion

Author: 2026/10/08

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on all British Columbia political parties to scrap plans to expand the provincial sales tax in the wake of new polling that shows the overwhelming majority of British Columbians are opposed to it.

“The last thing cash-strapped people need in B.C. is a sales tax on more things and this poll backs that up,” said Kris Sims, CTF B.C. Director. “Regular working people are fighting to afford homes, food and fuel, and all politicians should commit to scrapping this plan to expand the PST.”

A Leger poll, conducted for the CTF, shows 59 per cent want the PST expansion scrapped immediately, 17 per cent want to delay the sales tax expansion and 24 per cent are unsure.

Of those with an opinion, a strong 78 per cent of British Columbians say the tax expansion should be scrapped altogether and 22 per cent say it should be delayed.

Women with a confirmed view of the issue feel the most strongly, with 85 per cent saying the tax expansion should be immediately scrapped, while 72 per cent of men feel the same way.

“The PST is already bad enough because it takes millions of dollars away from people when they buy everything from pet food to used cars and expanding this tax is the last thing any government should do,” said Sims. “Voters should be asking all candidates of all parties during this election if they support this tax expansion.”

The results of the poll can be found HERE.
