SASKATOON, SK: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation released its 27th annual Gas Tax Honesty Report, shining a light on all the hidden taxes that make trips to the fuel pump more expensive.
“Saskatchewanians are paying three different taxes every time they fill up their vehicles,” said Gage Haubrich, CTF Prairie Director. “Both Prime Minister Mark Carney and Premier Scott Moe need to cut their taxes on fuel that make life more expensive.”
Drivers in Saskatchewan are paying 31 cents in federal and provincial taxes per litre of gasoline when they fill up, according to the CTF’s Gas Tax Honesty Report.
Filling up a family minivan in Saskatchewan costs about $23 in taxes.
Taxes make up about 24 per cent of the pump price in the province.
The federal gas tax costs 10 cents per litre and the GST costs about 6.3 cents per litre. The provincial government also charges a provincial gas tax of 15 cents per litre.
The provincial governments of Ontario along with Newfoundland and Labrador also cut gas taxes to save drivers money. Newfoundland cut its gas tax by eight cents per litre in June 2022.
Ontario recently made its 6.4 cents per litre gas tax cut permanent.
“Moe needs to take a look at what’s going on in other provinces and cut the gas tax,” Haubrich said. “Other provinces have been able to cut gas taxes to make life more affordable and the government of Saskatchewan needs to step up and do the same.”
