The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on the Houston government to implement recall legislation so Nova Scotians can hold politicians accountable between election cycles.
“Right now, Nova Scotians are stuck with their politicians for four years no matter what those politicians do after election day,” said Devin Drover, CTF Atlantic Director and General Counsel. “Recall gives taxpayers a real tool to fire politicians who break faith with the people who put them in office.”
The CTF's call comes after Becky Druhan, member of the legislative assembly for Lunenburg West, joined the Liberal caucus and announced plans to run for the Liberal leadership. Druhan was previously elected twice as a Progressive Conservative.
Recall legislation lets voters trigger a byelection between general elections. If enough constituents in a riding sign a petition within a set window, voters head to the ballot box to decide whether to keep their representative or pick someone else.
British Columbia has had recall laws since 1995. Alberta brought in its own recall act in 2022. In the United States, 39 states allow voters to recall politicians at the state or local level.
Nova Scotia has no such law.
“This isn’t about one politician or one party, it’s about putting power back where it belongs: in the hands of the taxpayers who pay the bills,” Drover said. “Nova Scotians hire their MLAs at the ballot box and they should also have the power to fire them.”
