Fréchette must scrap the carbon tax

Author: Nicolas Gagnon 2026/06/09

QUEBEC, QC.: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation delivered a petition signed by more than 50,000 Quebecers calling on Premier Christine Fréchette’s government to abolish Quebec’s carbon tax.

“More than 50,000 Quebecers have signed this petition because they are fed up with being the only Canadians still forced to pay a carbon tax,” said Nicolas Gagnon, Quebec Director for the Canadian Taxpayers Federation. “This petition should serve as a wake-up call to every party represented at the National Assembly that tens of thousands of Quebecers want the carbon tax abolished.

“With a provincial election approaching, Quebecers deserve a clear answer from every political party on whether they support keeping or eliminating the carbon tax.”

Quebec is the only province in Canada that still imposes a consumer carbon tax through its cap- and-trade system linked to California.

Based on the latest carbon market auction results, Quebec’s carbon tax now costs drivers approximately 10.8 cents per litre of gasoline, including the GST and QST charged on the tax at the pump.

For a family filling a 64-litre minivan, the carbon tax adds roughly $7 to the cost of every fill up.

Since its implementation in 2013, Quebec’s carbon tax has cost taxpayers more than $11.2 billion, including approximately $1.3 billion in 2024-25 alone.

The Fréchette government announced last month it would refund carbon tax costs paid by Quebec farmers for the next two years.

“By carving out an exemption for farmers, the government is conceding that the carbon tax is making life more expensive,” Gagnon said. “Instead of temporarily shielding one group from the tax, the government should scrap it for everyone, once and for all.”

The petition was delivered today to the National Assembly to send a clear message to Fréchette and all political parties that Quebecers want action on the carbon tax and relief from rising costs.
