SASKATOON, SK: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on Premier Scott Moe to keep Saskatchewan the only carbon tax-free province in Canada after he said he’s open to discussing a hidden industrial carbon tax with the federal government.
“Moe has spent years fighting the carbon tax – he can’t cave to the feds now,” said Gage Haubrich, CTF Prairie Director. “Saskatchewan is the only carbon tax-free province in Canada and it needs to stay that way.”
Moe recently said that the Saskatchewan government will start talks with Ottawa to find a “workable place” on charging Saskatchewanians an industrial carbon tax again.
This comes after the federal government signed an agreement with the Alberta government to hike that province’s industrial carbon tax.
The Saskatchewan government scrapped its industrial carbon tax on April 1, 2025. When removing the tax, Moe said that Saskatchewan is “taking the lead on the removal of this harmful tax.”
Polling shows that 69 per cent of Saskatchewanians support keeping the province carbon-tax free.
“Moe needs to listen to the majority of Saskatchewanians that know that carbon taxes on refineries make gas more expensive and carbon taxes on fertilizer plants increase costs for farmers,” Haubrich said. “All carbon taxes do is make life more expensive and Saskatchewan businesses less competitive.”
Leger polling shows that 68 per cent of Canadians believe businesses pass most or some of the cost of the industrial carbon tax on to consumers.
