New poll shows Eby should oppose carbon tax hike

Author: Carson Binda 2024/03/27

VANCOUVER, B.C.: An overwhelming majority of British Columbians want Premier David Eby to call on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to cancel the April 1 increase to the carbon tax, according to polling by Leger

“Seven out of 10 premiers have already told Trudeau not to hike the tax and a huge majority of British Columbians want our premier to join the fight,” said Carson Binda, B.C. Director for the Canadian Taxpayers Federation. “British Columbians deserve a premier who will fight for us, not a yes-man for Trudeau.”

The Leger poll, commissioned by the CTF asked British Columbians if they support or oppose Eby joining seven other Canadian premiers in telling Trudeau to cancel the carbon tax hike.

The results of the poll show:

  • 73 per cent support

  • 26 per cent oppose

The federal carbon tax is set to rise on April 1. Despite B.C. administering a separate, provincial carbon tax, Eby is set to increase B.C.’s carbon in-step with the federal government increase.

After April 1, drivers in Vancouver will be paying a total of about 81 cents per litre of gasoline in taxes, while drivers in Victoria will be paying 74 cents per litre and across the rest of the province drivers will be paying around 67 cents per litre in taxes.

“Eby can’t shift the blame to Ottawa for the carbon tax hike if he hasn’t even tried to stand up to the prime minister like most of the other premiers in Canada,” said Binda.
