Montreal, QC — The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on the Quebec government to deliver broader tax relief after announcing the removal of the TVQ on select grocery items.
“Removing the TVQ from some grocery items is welcome and now the premier needs to deliver a significant tax cut to make life more affordable,” said Nicolas Gagnon, Quebec Director for the CTF. “Quebec families are paying some of the highest taxes in the country and they deserve a tax cut that leaves more money in their pockets at the end of the month.”
Premier Christine Fréchette will announce today the removal of Quebec’s sales tax, known as the TVQ, on a range of grocery and pharmacy items, including granola bars, muffins, nuts, pre-cut fruits and vegetables, tissues, and toilet paper.
Quebec becomes the second province, after Manitoba, to eliminate its provincial sales tax on grocery products.
The Quebec government estimates the measure will save the average household roughly $50 annually and save Quebec taxpayers a total of $100 million per year.
According to the 2026 Food Price Report from Dalhousie University, the average Quebec family of four will have to spend nearly $1,000 more on food this year due to increasing prices.
“Saving families $50 a year is welcome, but it barely scratches the surface when Quebec households face nearly $1,000 more in grocery costs this year,” said Gagnon.
“If the government is serious about affordability, it must cut gas taxes and eliminate the carbon tax, which would deliver hundreds of dollars in real savings. That would save Quebec families hundreds of dollars a year instead of just a few dollars a month.”
